I was blessed to be spiritually born into a fellowship of believers who believed in the inerrancy and infallibility of the scriptures in their original autographs. We would say we believed everything in the Bible – from Genesis to maps! But of course,
- Saying you believe something and actually believing something is very different.
- Saying you believe something and actually doing what you say you believe are different.
- Saying you believe the Bible and doing what Jesus says should not be different, but it often is.
Jesus authenticated the scriptures. His confidence in them is why we can have confidence in them.
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
Matthew 5:17, 18
Jesus did not take his authority from the scriptures. His authority is the source of any authority the Bible has.
Then Jesus came to them and said, all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Jesus authenticated the scriptures and we can read and believe them with confidence. Allow them to reveal Jesus to you. Revel in His love and grace. Listen for His voice. Follow His lead. Live by His resident life in you. Do what He says.
You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,
Allow nothing to come between you and Jesus. Allow nothing – not even a so called reverence for the scriptures – to keep you from reverencing Jesus Christ.
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,
and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
Ephesians 1:17 – 23 (Emphasis added)
Let us acknowledge, worship and follow Jesus. Meet with Him in the scriptures, in His creation, among those to whom He is sending us and with His people. We are His sheep. Listen to His voice. Follow Him.
